Policy & Advocacy
Georgia Parents for Responsible Health Education is first and foremost a grass-roots organization for parents, supporting local activism in schools and school districts.
We collaborate with other state wide organizations such as Planned Parenthood and G-CAPP (Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention), as well as with Reproductive Health and Public Health professionals, in support of increased education of students and their parents/guardians on teen sexuality and reproductive health. We also collaborate with local PTA’s, and other parent groups working to advance their children’s rights and knowledge. We communicate our information material to local and state politicians and invite them to our meetings; however, we do not have a lobbyist at the State Capitol.
To best advance our cause, it is important to keep up with current federal and state policies. However, the state of sex education and pregnancy prevention in the United States is currently subject to a number of changes, and it can be hard to keep up. Much is happening in the White House and Congress which affect both sex education funding and teen reproductive health. The most important development is that the 2010 Federal Budget proposes to fund actual prevention of teen pregnancy instead of the severely lacking abstinence-only programs. We hope that the links and material provided here will help you as a Parent Activist, either at the local or state level. Remember, our purpose in GPRHE is to help you, every step of the way, in your activism to get your child the sex education she/he deserves!
