Sex Education & The Georgia Law
Many people, including some elected officials, believe that Georgia is an abstinence-only state. It is not – on this page we provide you with information about the Georgia law, the Department of Education Rule as well as local school board policies. Currently, the new Georgia Performance Standards for Health Education are being developed and a draft is available on the Department of Education website. The final standard will be decided by the Board of Education in the beginning of 2010.
For your convenience we have both full and abbreviated versions of the State law and rules. We have also made a complete listing of local Board of Education policies, as complete as the available information allows. The teen pregnancy rates provided in this document are from 2004 and 2007.
